PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE
January 2021 - April 2021
I completed my full-time internship at Advent Health of Ocala in their Wellness Center. I served as a health education resource and adviser for their county-wide screenings and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center. These are some of the projects I completed through my 12-week journey.
My first project was to create a training tool for future interns to implement in their screenings and educational sessions. It focuses on what motivational interviewing is, how it is used, and why it's important. I also describe multiple, practical examples that explain in further detail what questions we may ask to increase a patient's motivation for behavior change and create a connection. Furthermore, many of these examples are backed up by evidence-based articles and studies. As an intern at this facility, I never knew about the effectiveness of motivational interviewing until my supervisor mentioned it to me, so I developed this tool to guide future interns in their experiences.

My second project involves the development of a newsletter for the nursing department at Advent Health of Ocala. In today's circumstances, it is important to remind essential workers to take care of themselves in order to take care of others. This newsletter follows Advent Health's mission of "whole-person wellness" and it aims to remind nurses that the mission also applies to them. Nurses are considered essential in the healthcare industry; therefore their health is also of primary importance!

My third project is my involvement in the implementation process of a 6-week program named "Eat Healthy, Be Active." This new project was created by the Marion County Hospital District (MCHD) and its main purpose is to educate and change unhealthy behaviors within Marion County's bus driver population. During this program, I participated in the initial and final Biometric screenings, presented on the "Eating Healthy on a Budget" session that was implemented on week 3, and assisted with all educational seminars. The Biometric screenings include blood pressure readings, weight, and body fat percentage (BFP). These screening results are used to compare their progress from the beginning to the end of the program. The participants were divided into Zone 1 and Zone 2 to compare who makes the most progress and increase participation numbers. Zone 1's session was every Tuesday and Zone 2's session was every Thursday. After every session, we present the participants with an evaluation survey to inform us of how useful each session was and what changes to make. The MCHD will use those results to make modifications to the program in the future.
